Overcoming Failure // Desk With Waterfall Edge
Bob Barker and I are tackling a new desk for my wife. We designed a desk that compliments the build in DJ station we recently made her and features a waterfall edge with continuous grain one one side. This build came with multiple mistakes and an outright failure that needed creative solutions to overcome.

Coffee Table with Concealed Compartment
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.2 месяца назад
A friend of mine wanted a new coffee table with a hidden compartment. So, Bob Barker and I decided to tackle the project. Our goal was to make it so the hidden compartment wasn't obvious like many others are. That is the main reason we did not use drawer slides for the top - because then you need to cut some obvious notches in the aprons for them to function. That feels like it defeats the whol...

    The ONLY thing I care about in a sander is what can remove material faster. Compared to the 5 inch variable speed DeWalt for under $100, does the festool do anything more? Does it spin significantly faster or vibrate more?

    • @exsmoker74

      Best for high removal is the Festool gear driven rotex150, it’s crazy how quick it will strip likes of a door with years of paint , these are top finishing sanders far less vibration, while still being fast

    Great job. The only thing i would do differently is to ignore the table top pocket holes and fastening. Table top is not going anywhere...plus you can install undermount blocks to avoid movement. But what this does of course is allow for easy transport (as u mentioned) and more importantly, seasonal storage for harsher climates.

    Such a beautiful piece. I have a desk that I picked up cheap that has a similar look without the cabinet. Unfortunately the finish is almost orange. It was built as a two student desk with two large drawers one having a front that drops down with a keyboard wrist rest. I am slowly gathering the tools and skill to make a copy hopefully before I am so old that I no longer use anything beyond a bed. I do not want to refinish my desk I just want a different wood and the satisfaction of the build. I am jealous. Your skill your tools your wife’s desk. Keep the videos coming and I will continue to watch and learn.

    Great piece, despite the setbacks, good recovery! Waterfall edge turned out really nice. I have a similar setup to yours in the garage and I have contemplated the next (major) tool purchase. Your saw is fine for these projects unless you find it under-powered (I do very occasionally, I just keep the blades sharp). You will go years before you will need a better/bigger planer. Your sanding system is awesome, as is the Domino. So the decision I face comes down to this: If I end up doing a ton of paneled cabinet doors, i will get a drum sander. If I end up making a lot of hardwood tops, I will get a jointer. The jointer will probably win out because it will make my life SO much easier, I can buy nice wood for less $$, and it will improve the quality of even small projects like cutting boards. Keep the great videos coming!

    Great video! So many channels on RUclips have a woodworker with a shop full of tools purchased on Craig's List or handed down through generations...and a $1,000+ sanding system. This really makes sense to me since the quality of the sander really DOES make a difference, regardless of skill. I also think the reduced vibration and better ergonomics of a high-end sander become really important in avoiding repetitive stress injury at best, and neuropathy at worst, particularly after hundreds of hours of sanding. Maybe that's just important to us old guys...

    Hey there! I have to tell you that I’ve been watching your videos from day 1 and the quality of this channel continues to improve with each video. Great job! I do, however, have a question as a fellow woodworker. I hope it isn’t too rude to ask but I am genuinely interested. Why did you decide to invest in expensive Festool machines like the Domino and Miter saw instead of replacing the most commonly used tool in the shop- the table saw? Asking since I went the other way.. Had a period of time where I had maybe 10,000 $ worth of Festool machines and ended up selling most of them (except for the router) and going back to basics like dowels, m&t and half laps.

    • @woodpackdiy
      @woodpackdiy 3 месяца назад

      Its not rude at all - its a legitimate good question. For me, it wasn't a matter of picking one over the other, it was purely a matter of space. I would have preferred to get a pro table saw like a saw stop or something like that, but I currently just don't have any room for it. I do all my projects in my garage, and at the end of the day, push everything to the side so I can park in it. So, the table saw of my dreams is on hold until I figure something out.

    Nice build, but I question the double layer top, and the mitred trim around it. I could understand if the top layer was sacrifial, but pva'ing them together puts paid to that idea. And a close up of the 'trim' shows innacurate cutting of the leg joints. I have no issue with the innacurracy, it's the combining of diy workmanship and OTT extras. Apart from that, I love the basic bench design.
